General FAQs

  • Q: What is "lagniappe"?

“Lagniappe” (pronounced LAN-yap) is a Louisiana Creole and New Orleans term meaning “a little something extra.”

It comes from the Spanish word la ñapa, which traders in Latin America used to describe a small bonus item given to customers—like a baker’s dozen. In Louisiana, it carries that same spirit of generosity and delight.

  • Q: Why the sidewalk?

We like making art and looking at art. Opening a gallery is an expensive endeavor that can alienate people who aren’t used to traditional art spaces. We see magical things in the Bywater every day, so it felt like a no-brainer to turn a little extra sidewalk into something that inspires creativity and ideas.

  • Q: Is the art for sale?

Yes—artwork featured in curated exhibitions is available for purchase online. Artists receive 100% of the proceeds from sales, minus standard Square processing fees. Lagniappe does not take a commission; our goal is to support artists directly without turning the space into a traditional sales gallery.

  • Q: What’s the difference between curated exhibitions and take art, leave art?

Curated exhibitions are artist-led shows selected by Lagniappe and include a locked display, an honorarium, and optional online sales. Take art, leave art exchanges are open, participatory, and community-driven, with no compensation or sales component.

  • Q: How long are exhibitions on view?

Curated exhibitions typically run for about one month, though timing may vary depending on the work and the season.

  • Q: Why are you not on Instagram?

Doesn’t it feel more fun that you found us on your own, outside of the algorithm? Let’s keep that spirit of accidental discovery alive. Text a friend to meet you at our next opening.

  • Q: Where the heck are you located?

Lagniappe Gallery is located on the sidewalk of Clouet Street, between St. Claude Avenue and North Rampart.

FAQs for Artists

  • Q: What compensation do you offer artists?

We are intentionally not-for-profit, but we believe artists should be compensated for their time and creative labor. Artists participating in curated exhibitions currently receive a $100 honorarium, along with the opportunity to connect with new audiences through sidewalk openings and our website.

  • Q: Is my art secure?

Security depends on the type of exhibition. During curated shows, the gallery box is locked while remaining fully visible from the sidewalk. During take art, leave art exchanges, the box remains unlocked and open to participation.

While all exhibitions are installed with care, Lagniappe is ultimately a street-facing, experimental space. If you would not feel comfortable with your work being visible to the public—or subject to the realities of the sidewalk—this may not be the right space for you.

  • Q: What dimensions should my art be?

Our exhibition space is slightly larger than a shoe box. We recommend 2D work about the size of a postcard, or sculptures smaller than 10 inches square.

  • Q: Who can submit work?

We primarily work with emerging artists and creatives whose work feels aligned with the scale and spirit of the space. While we love supporting local artists, submissions are not limited by geography.

  • Q: What are the next steps after submitting?

Once your inquiry is received, a member of our team will review your portfolio and follow up. This is a non-commercial passion project, so we appreciate your patience. If it feels like a good fit, we’ll be in touch to discuss a potential exhibition and any special needs for displaying your work.
